Ukraine prepares to impose sanctions on Nicaragua for illegally appointing a consul to Crimea annexed by the Russian Federation. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba stated this.
According to him, the Nicaraguan authorities have taken an unfriendly step towards Ukraine, appointing Oleg Belaventsev an honorary consul on the occupied peninsula. Earlier, Belaventsev was sentenced in absentia to 13 years in prison for an attempt on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine’s borders.
“We have learned that, unfortunately, despite Ukraine’s warnings not to take such a step, the Nicaraguan government has officially appointed an honorary consul in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, which is temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation. Belaventsev was one of the active participants of Crimea annexation. So that his appointment on the of an honorary consul position is a particularly blatant and violent step,” Kuleba said.
He stressed that our state considers such illegal actions of Nicaragua as a direct violation of Ukrainian and international legislation.
To recap, an honorary consulate is a separate form of a country’s representation. Under it, a state, which opens the consulate, appoints a citizen of a country where it is opened to represent its interests.
Nicaragua is among the countries that do not systematically vote for the UN resolution initiated by Ukraine on the Russia admission to be an occupier country due to the Crimea annexation.
