The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine has proposed to the Cabinet of Ministers to extend the deadline for the final completion of the Wall project on the border with Russia. This is stated in the explanatory note of the State Border Guard Service regarding the necessary changes.
It is noted that if the Cabinet approves these proposals, the total cost of the “Wall” will increase to 6.2 billion UAH.
The agency notes that the approval of the proposed changes will have a “positive impact on the interests of citizens and bodies of the State Border Guard Service”, as it will allow equipping engineering structures, means of detection, surveillance, and identification. This will increase the efficiency of protection and defense of the state border.
Completion of the construction of the border on the Ukrainian-Russian section is proposed in the following periods:
- in 2020-2021 – within the Kharkiv and Luhansk regions;
- in 2021-2022 – within the Luhansk and Sumy regions;
- in 2022-2025 – within the Sumy, Chernihiv, and Odesa regions.
It will be recalled that the Wall project was launched on the border with Russia in autumn 2014. As of the end of May this year, the State Border Guard Service stated that the work had been completed by 40%. Currently, a significant part of the Ukrainian-Russian border, which runs in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, is not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.
