Today Ukraine celebrates National Flag Day. Pursuant to the Presidential Decree of 23 August 2004, the holiday was established “in honour of the centuries-old history of Ukrainian statehood, the state symbols of independent Ukraine and to foster citizens’ respect for the state symbols of Ukraine.”
In honour of the holiday, an official ceremony of raising the State Flag of Ukraine is held throughout the country with the participation of scientists and cultural figures;, representatives of international, non-governmental, and religious organisations; and political parties. Ordinary citizens of Ukraine and the diaspora, enterprises, government agencies and organisations also hoist the State Flag of Ukraine.
Background
According to the official version, a group of MPs brought the blue and yellow Ukrainian flag into the Verkhovna Rada session hall on 23 August 1991, after the failure of the coup in Moscow. On 4 September, the flag was solemnly raised above the parliament building. The resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of 28 January 1992 granted the Flag the status of the State. The Flag of the State of Ukraine was ultimately affirmed by Article 20 of the Constitution of Ukraine in 1996.
