The presentation of the book “Ukraine Vis-à-Vis Russia and the EU. Misperceptions of Foreign Challenges in Times of War, 2014–2015” was held at the Ukrainian Hub. At the event, Dr. Nychyk talked about how she wrote her work and noted the importance of analysing the experience of the previous years of the war with Russia. She reminded the audience that Russia still has the resources to wage war and that victory is possible only through the coordinated work of all European countries and Ukraine.
In general, the book “Ukraine Vis-à-Vis Russia and the EU. Misperceptions of Foreign Challenges in Times of War, 2014–2015” explores Ukraine’s foreign policy in the country’s relations with the EU and Russia during the first year of the Russian-Ukrainian war, in 2014-2015. The author applied game theory approach to decision-making in foreign policy and conducted 38 elite interviews with policy-makers from the EU, Ukraine, and Russia.
The findings showed multiple misperceptions in EU-Ukraine-Russia relations. For example, Ukrainian politicians expected the EU to support Ukraine militarily and accept its quick accession to the EU after Euromaidan, the European Union’s indecisiveness and slowness in its Ukraine and Russia policies.
After the presentation, the guests asked the author about her views on the situation in Ukraine, as well as the mistakes made by Ukraine and our partner countries in relations with Russia.
Many thanks to everyone who came to the event!
