In anticipation of the European Council’s meeting on 23-24 June to consider Ukraine’s application for EU membership, thousands of people formed a symbolic “human chain” around the European Commission’s building in central Brussels.
The rally was held under the auspices of NGO Promote Ukraine, Ukrinform reports.
The event participants brought the flags of Ukraine and the European Union and chanted, “Ukraine is Europe.” The purpose of the rally was to draw the attention of Europeans to the need to vote “for” candidate status for Ukraine.
“We believe, and the EU leadership also believes, that Ukraine is part of the European family,” said Marta Barandiy, President of Promote Ukraine.
She is confident in the positive conclusion of the European Commission on Ukraine’s application, which is expected to be published by the end of next week. However, according to Barandiy, there are still some concerns about the results of the vote in the European Council.
“We talk a lot about this, and I hear more and more positive feedback, even from skeptical parties, with which we talk in the European Parliament and in Belgium, Almost all of them already support Ukraine. Therefore, we need to press a little bit more – and we are almost candidates,” Barandiy said.
