The counterintelligence department of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) thwarted a series of large-scale acts of sabotage on the railway, detaining an enemy agent during a multi-stage special operation in Chernivtsi.
According to the investigation files, the detainee was an agent of the Russian-controlled special services of the so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic,” who has a Ukrainian passport and a Kyiv residence registration, but for a long time was a “sleeper” in one of the Middle Eastern countries.
After the beginning of the full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation, the agent was instructed by his “curators” to come to Ukraine to gather intelligence data on the transport channels for the supply of weapons and military equipment for our country.
In addition, the criminal was to investigate the location of fuel tanks and Ukrainian military units in the Chernivtsi region.
After obtaining the data, the enemy planned to carry out acts of sabotage, including explosions at railway facilities and logistics warehouses.
Currently, the detainee is charged under Part 1 of Art. 258-3 (participation in a terrorist group or terrorist organisation) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. A measure of pre-trial restraint in the form of detention was chosen for him.
A pre-trial investigation is underway to identify and prosecute other individuals involved in the intelligence and subversive activities against Ukraine.
