Real disasters and the collapse of the system. What has Putin created?

In a recent article “How Putin Is Using COVID-19. He’s going to be president for life” a veteran reporter Reuben Johnson writes:  “The former KGB lieutenant colonel Vladimir Putin has reigned for 20 years and it looks like he is not going to “leave the throne” ever”. He reminds us that the  Soviet-time constitution under Medvedev was changed in a way to allow Putin to serve two consecutive 6-years instead of 4-year terms. And now, 4 years before the end of his 4th term that should be last, the Kremlin looks into other options to allow Putin to stay in power forever like changing the constitution or “resetting the term clock to zero”. The situation around COVID 19 helps him to go with the “term-clock-zero”.

Like other Russian leaders before him, Putin wants people to believe that he is an “indispensable man” without whom the entire system would collapse. To stay in power, Putin creates chaos and fear and then places himself in the position of being the only person who can navigate the country out of this chaos.

But in fact, it does not look good for Russia. According to a Kyiv businessman who previously worked for former Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko says “There is no hope for reform, there is no hope for the economy, there is no hope for the healthcare system—nothing. Putin can only survive until this game has run its course and the real disasters waiting to happen in Russia cause the system he created to collapse”.
