The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has summoned the Ambassador of Hungary. The reason for this is the prank by Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán who disgraced himself by wearing a scarf hinting at the annexation of the Ukrainian territory.
“The promotion of revisionist ideas in Hungary does not contribute to the development of Ukraine–Hungary relations. The Ambassador of Hungary will be invited to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and informed of the unacceptability of Viktor Orbán’s act,” Oleg Nikolenko, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, posted on Facebook.
Ukraine is also waiting for an official apology from the Hungarian side and a denial of the encroachment on the territorial integrity of the state.
As a reminder, on 20 November, Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán came to a friendly football match between the national teams of Hungary and Greece wearing a scarf depicting the map of “Greater Hungary” with parts of neighbouring states, particularly the current Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, and Ukraine, in its composition. These territories belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until the end of World War I.
Commenting on the incident, MEP for Romania Alin Mituța said that EU leaders should punish and isolate Orbán for such things. According to him, such a gesture puts Orban in line with Putin, who is also obsessed with changing borders.
