DEAccording to the Security Service of Ukraine, 510 criminal proceedings have been initiated on crimes related to corruption since the beginning of the year. 679 people were found to be suspects, 104 people were convicted of corruption, and 143 officials were fired.
The SSU head Ivan Bakanov announced this during a meeting at the General Prosecutor Office.
“Cases of government structures systemic destruction by corruption threaten national security. The Security Service opposes such cases. These are specific investigations based on SSU materials, which lead to accusations. According to them, there are quite applicable sanctions – dismissal and imprisonment,” Ivan Bakanov said.
According to him, the largest number of corruption offences was detected in the power authorities at different levels. In particular, there were about 212 criminal proceedings, and 269 announced suspicions. Among them is the suspicion reported to the former head of the Kirovohrad Regional State Administration for extorting a bribe of 1.3 million hryvnias. Besides, a large-scale scheme for issuing illegal permits in the DABI, which had been operating for years, was eliminated.
Also, a significant number of corruption crimes were detected in law enforcement and regulatory agencies. A total of 208 criminal proceedings were instituted, and 268 people have been reported as suspects. In total, since the beginning of the year, six organised criminal groups in law enforcement agencies have been neutralised.
Besides, on behalf of the President, the Security Service, together with other law enforcement agencies, counteracts corruption cases at the customs border, illegal deforestation, and crimes of dimensional and weight control on the roads. Regarding the latter, corruption schemes by actual “Ukrtransbezpeka” officials and the budget funds waste of UAH 100 mio for the purchase of dimensional and weight systems in 2018 have been revealed.
